Devon v Isle of Wight 20/21 January 2001

First Christmas then the rain, then the floods and despite some quite really good performances from the Isle of Wight team, we faced the mighty Devon County squad. Saturday saw the Ladies ‘B’ get things under way. First up was Beryl Mannion and despite her brave performance was somewhat hampered by the venues lights being turned on and off several times. A welcome return to Jayne Trickey who through past records will improve as the season progresses and to Dianne Mew who was playing her first game this season. The Lady of the Match was Darrell Coombs (3-2) with a 15.18 average making it 4 wins out of 5 this season.
The Mens ‘B’ started on a high with Paul Thomas winning his game 3-2 which also got him the Man of the Match award with a 21.40 average. Making their debuts for this season were Steve Gregory and to Stuart Bailey whose average was 23.15. There were many games which could have gone either way but unfortunately, Devon took them 3-2. They were Pete Shaw, Dave Robinson, Kevin Mannion and Golly Marriot.

The Ladies ‘A’ team started with the same format as the men with Sam Shaw and Mandy King going to the 5th leg unluckily losing 3-2. Trish Davies was unlucky as well losing her 100% record. Sally Hardy once again showed good form winning her game 1-3 and Ladies Captain Brenda Dyer showed the reason why she is 4th in the divisional averages by taking her game comfortably 1-3 earning her the Lady of the Match with a 22.09 average.
With the match already won, Devonshire’s Mens ‘A’ showed just how really strong they were with 180’s and high shots galore. Bob Anderson took his game to 3-2 despite his opponent taking an 11 darts leg which included 140, 140, 140 81 game shot. Bernie Adcock took his game to the last leg but new player Stuart Bailey was the only winner on the day for the Island and took the Man of the Match award with a 20.88 average. 180’s for the Island were: Paul Thomas, Pete Shaw, Golly Marriot and Bob White.
Final Score: 31 - 5.
